Arrest Made In Motorcyclist Death, Pandemic Traffic Is Still Deadly

May 14, 2020 Brown Moore Motorcycle Accidents

As people across this country continue to deal with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, most analysts expected that the roadways would be less crowded. The truth is that roadways have seen less traffic, but that does not mean that injuries and fatalities are still not occurring. Recently, an arrest was made after an incident in which a vehicle turned in front of a motorcyclist, resulting in a fatality. The Charlotte motorcycle accident attorneys at Brown, Moore & Associates, PLLC want to discuss this case as well as current traffic situations in this area.

What Happened in this Charlotte Motorcycle Crash?

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that, in the morning hours of May 4, 2020, one man died after a crash involving a motorcycle in Charlotte. Police say that a 60-year-old man was driving his 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when the driver of a Nissan sedan attempted to turn into a parking lot in front of him. Police say that they believe the Nissan driver crossed into the path of the Harley-Davidson, leading to the motorcycle striking the side of the sedan.

Police say that the driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, but that he passed away due to his injuries. The driver of the Nissan was arrested for Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and issued a citation for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.

According to data available from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, we know that there were 3,566 total motorcycle crashes during the latest reporting year across the state. Out of those incidents, there were 176 fatal crashes, and more than 2,800 injury crashes. The simple truth is that motorcyclists are much more likely to sustain injuries or fatalities in the event that a crash occurs than those inside traditional passenger vehicles.

All Charlotte Residents Need to be Mindful of Traffic Safety

Right now, there has been less traffic on the roadways than normal because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, as North Carolina begins to open up, all drivers on the roadway need to be alert. If you have been driving less due to the pandemic, take some time as you start driving more during the phased reopening, and be mindful of your surroundings. In particular, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists who have become more accustomed to having less traffic on the roadway. We all need to be especially mindful of traffic safety right now.
