Armed Forces Members and Veterans Receive Special Considerations in NC Licensing

Mar 12, 2015 Brown Moore Car Accidents

It is impossible to begin a discussion about Armed Forces member benefits without expressing gratitude for the risks they take to keep Americans safe and free. Active military personnel deserves to enjoy every moment of their furlough time without having to take care of their licensing requirements. In fact, they may not even be in the state when their license expires.

It is important for every member of the military to learn how North Carolina makes licensing requirements manageable for Armed Forces members and how veterans can expect special benefits for the rest of their lives.

Special Licensing Considerations for Active Military Members

Few people look forward to the experience of visiting a DMV office to take care of the administrative tasks associated with their licenses. Still, most DMV offices are open beyond normal work hours and on Saturdays to help drivers take care of their licensing requirements.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV) recognizes that Armed Forces members and Reservists cannot always follow the precise deadlines required to obtain and renew state licenses. They offer the following services to make the process easier:

  • Early license renewal: Members of the Armed Forces or Reserves can renew their license earlier than normally scheduled if they are being deployed anywhere beyond state lines.
  • Extension of Reservist license expiration: The NC DMV extends licenses up to 60 days after the date of release from active duty outside the state.
  • Licensing without Proof of Residency: Military members who do not have proof of state residency can use the address of a NC host family as proof.

“VETERAN” License Designations Provide Certain Lifetime Benefits

All veterans can take advantage of the military discounts provided by a variety of retailers and service providers. In the past, however, obtaining these discounts required that veterans produce their military discharge paperwork. This is a lot to ask of more than 24,000 elderly World War II veterans who still reside in North Carolina today.

Just about everyone needs a license or photo ID to prove identity in a variety of situations, and thanks to the Veteran Designation program, a single application at the NC DMV provides the verifiable proof needed to take advantage of the benefits our veterans need and deserve.
