Police Identify Man Killed By An Impaired Driver In Charlotte

Sep 14, 2020 Brown Moore Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrians face significant risks anytime they are in or around the roadway. Unfortunately, far too many pedestrian accidents occur in and around the Charlotte area. In many cases, these crashes are caused by the careless or negligent actions of other drivers. The Charlotte pedestrian accident lawyers at Brown, Moore & Associates, PLLC want to discuss a recent accident in which an impaired driver struck and killed a pedestrian in east Charlotte.

What Happened In This Tragic Crash?

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a crash that they say led to a man losing his life in east Charlotte. Police officers say that 33-year-old Eric Love was hit by a car as he was crossing W.T. Harris Boulevard near Albemarle Road.

Police say that Love died at the scene of the crash.

Investigators have determined that a 2013 Volkswagen driven by Timothy Nicholson was traveling north on W.T. Harris Boulevard as Love was crossing the street. Officials also determined that Love was not in a crosswalk at the time he was struck by the vehicle. However, officers say that Nicholson showed signs of impairment after the collision occurred. He was charged with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless driving.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, we can see that there were 11,345 total crashes caused by alcohol impairment during the latest reporting year in the state. Out of these collisions, there were 411 fatalities and 7,602 injuries.

When comparing alcohol-compared collisions to the total fatality rate across North Carolina, we can see that impaired driving was responsible for 4% of the total collisions but more than 28% of the total traffic fatalities during the latest year. Unfortunately, pedestrians are even more likely to sustain severe injuries or to be killed in a collision involving an impaired driver. Pedestrians do not have any protection against the force of a vehicle slamming into them.
