What happened here?

We have learned that a recent incident on I-85 was nearly tragic for a woman and her young infant. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says that a car with a woman and her child inside hydroplaned. The driver of a tractor-trailer tried to avoid hitting the car but was unable to. A video of the incident shows a firefighter getting the infant out of the vehicle.

The tractor-trailer was left dangling over the center median in the aftermath of the crash. The baby, the mother, and the truck driver were all taken to the hospital but are expected to be okay.

What we know can happen

We are grateful that nobody was seriously hurt in this crash. Even though investigators found no fault on the part of the truck driver, we know that incidents involving large trucks like this can be detrimental. Semi-trucks and other large commercial trucks can reach weights of up to 80,000 pounds. Compare that with the average weight of a passenger vehicle, 4,000 pounds, and you can see why injuries occur.

It is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries as a result of truck crashes:

These injuries often result in major medical expenses for crash victims and their families. In many cases, a victim is unable to work while they recover from their injuries, causing them to lose the income they need to support themselves and their families.

We know that vehicle failure is often to blame in these crashes, which is why it is so vital that truck companies and owners regularly inspect and maintain each vehicle. Truck drivers should also be properly trained and never operate while impaired or while distracted.
